This is a gut checking blog to write, due to the fact that I too once was on the New Pharisee team. The truth be told the majority of us have a little Pharisee within us, and it is not all that bad. My pastor Dhati Lewis always says “it is better to err on legalism than sin”. So for those of us who struggle with the tension of holiness and sanctification we are always dancing on thin ice. My problem isn’t so much with personal legalism because as Paul says in Romans 14 “For whatever does not proceed from faith is sin”. So, once again, this is not an attack on the conscious of others, but a response to an ongoing epidemic of a different kind of legalism.
The legalism that I am addressing is doctrinal legalism. It is a growing epidemic among us and especially in the blogosphere. There are many blogs, whose entire premise or existence is to police the doctrine of others. I am all for correct doctrine, and for the most part, I think I have a pretty good grasp on some points, but in other areas I am “Semper Reformanda” (or always reforming). I hold to a reformed and New Covenant (sort of) perspective and for the most part I think I am right; however, others do not and they, as I do, believe themselves to be correct. I think these things can be debated, but as I always say “the end goal is edification”. When it gets to the point where harsh words, strawman assumptions, and self-righteousness takes precedent of mutual edification, the line has officially been crossed and sin has begun to take root. The problem is that most can’t recognize that this type of Doctrinal Witch Hunt is SIN. The other problem lies, in the fact, that most people (especially bloggers) don’t want to establish a relationship, they just want you to believe like they believe and then they are off to the next person to “correct” their theology. What happens in the process, is that feelings our hurt, people get upset, and those who practice such “Doctrinal Elitism” are wreaking more havoc than they know.
Think of this scenario. Just say a world class physician, decides he wants to go and help cure diseases in Sub-Sahara Africa. There is a disease that is killing 20-25% of these villages and this doctor has found the cure. So he goes to the villages enthused that he has the cure and eager to help cure their epidemic. So he goes from village to village treating everybody and not only that he has the anti-bodies to prevent others from getting it. Everyone is excited, he is on CNN, FOX News, Dr. Phil, Oprah, and gets a key to every city he visits. The problem is 1 year later all the people in that area have died. There is uproar, the doctor is confused. He checks his medicine everything looks good, the anti-bodies and medicine has been approved by FDA and is on the market in the U.S and everyone is taking the vaccination. They found one last person who has escaped the death but he is about to die also, doctors rush to find out what has caused the deaths, and they found out, that is a common cold! So the doctor, though he helped one epidemic caused even greater fatality by a common cold! This is what is going on today, in many churches, and by many bloggers. We fixed the doctrinal epidemic but we are killing people with our arrogance, self-righteousness, and lack of desire to establish significant relationships, all in the name “correcting theology”
Though, I said this was new, it really isn’t new at all. I just thought the title was catchy. This is a problem that has existed for over 2000 years. Let’s see what happened in Jesus’ day:
Matthew 1515:1 Then Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and said, 2 “Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat.” 3 He answered them, “And why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? 4 For God commanded, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, ‘Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.’ 5 But you say, ‘If anyone tells his father or his mother, “What you would have gained from me is given to God,” 6 he need not honor his father.’ So for the sake of your tradition you have made void the word of God. 7 You hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy of you, when he said: 8 “‘This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; 9 in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’” 10 And he called the people to him and said to them, “Hear and understand: 11 it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth; this defiles a person.” 12 Then the disciples came and said to him, “Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this saying?” 13 He answered, “Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be rooted up. 14 Let them alone; they are blind guides. And if the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit.” 15 But Peter said to him, “Explain the parable to us.” 16 And he said, “Are you also still without understanding? 17 Do you not see that whatever goes into the mouth passes into the stomach and is expelled? 18 But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person. 19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander. 20 These are what defile a person. But to eat with unwashed hands does not defile anyone.”
We all know the story. The Pharisees spent there time trying to find some crack in Jesus’ theology. This is how Luke puts it in Luke 11:
53 As he went away from there, the scribes and the Pharisees began to press him hard and to provoke him to speak about many things, 54 lying in wait for him, to catch him in something he might say.
I see the same attitude and desire in many of blogs today and blog searchers. They wait “to catch” someone in doctrinal error. This should not be our goal. I have come to the conclusion that the only person I totally agree with on every point of doctrine, is myself, and I have corrected myself many of times. Things that I said three years ago, I wouldn’t dare say today. Positions that I held to as stone have become like sand between my fingers. Things I would debate with great passion, are now the same truths I embrace with like passion. We make mistakes, we say dumb things, and other times we just don’t know what the heck we are talking about. The problem is WE ALL have been that way. But the same grace Jesus has extended us in progressively revealing His word to us, we refuse to extend to others. There were things that I rejected that I now fully embrace and Jesus was merciful to me. He sent people into my life, that built relationships with me (B.J, Shannon, Calvin Clark, Dhati, Keynon) and helped me through my error. They weren’t rough or hard, and they even let me have the last word. It wasn’t “believe this today” they understood my hang ups and when I was ready to accept it, they taught me again, like I never heard it before.
That isn’t the goal today for many. They can find everything wrong and nothing right. Just as the Pharisses only agreed with their “traditions” so many of us, put greater emphasis on doctrinal truth rather than a passion for the Glory of Jesus Christ, this shouldn’t be. You see, if we get the correct perspective of grace, the cross, and redemption, these other truths will follow closely behind. If we are more concerned with “our doctrinal truth” than we are God’s glory, we have lost the meaning of redemption. Listen closely. GOD DOES NOT TREAT US THIS WAY. He takes us, all jacked up and slowly conforms us to the image of His Son. Christ or the Holy Spirit, does not wait with a bat in Their hands ready to beat us, because we don’t fully understand soteriology, pnuematology, eschatology, trinitarianism, bibliology, hamartiology, ecclesiology, or even Christology. What God does is “demonstrates, His love towards us, while we were yet sinners”. God is patient with our progression and conformity and guess why, because He is the one who conforms us!
If you are reading this and this seems like you, impatient, unkind, always finding fault, you may want to evaluate your own progression. How long did you sit under “bad theology”? How long was it before you were convinced on truths you now hold as gold? What about certain sin areas? How long did you struggle with lust, envy, unforgiveness, or impatience before you got it right. Paul penned it beautifully in 2 Corinthians 13 when he said “examine YOURSELVES”. It is funny that Paul didn’t say examine others. Paul also says “who are you to pass judgment on another man’s servant” in Romans 14.
Finally we must ask, what is the goal of my correction of others? Is it to help them have a better understanding of the truth of the gospel, or the win an argument? Is it to establish a relationship with someone in order to help them be conformed to the image of Christ? People use Paul as an example, but as my good friend Gabriel always points out is “Paul had a relationship with the majority of the people he wrote”. These were responses to churches he had planted, and you can tell by the fatherly love he permeates by his letters. The Pharisees, only wanted to put yokes of bondage on their followers. Jesus says “my yoke is easy”. What a contrast of yokes. You must examine your motives and if the end goal isn’t that of Christ, what you are doing is sinning against your brother.

How true this blog is my brother in the Lord! My wife (Excellence in Christ blog) were just discussing this last night after running into a sister in the Lord. I was talking about how I believe the Lord is calling us to start a bible study, not because we have all the answers but because the word of God calls us to study to show ourselves approved,2Tim2:15. And that means together, but I will be the first to admit only the by the grace of God that I struggle with a critical spirit of my brothers and sisters in the Lord. And the Lord is using you bro, because Christ prayed that the Father would make us one as they are one, but we would rather stay at a distance from one another and think that we are right. That is cheap, Christ said in Matthew 16:24 If any man will come after me, FIRST he must deny himself, take up his cross and follow me. In this verse to deny in the greek means , to forget one’s self, lose sight of one;s self and one’s own interest!
So a vital thing that the Lord is dealing with me on is this, based off of Matt 16:24 m, is that I can not follow him if I am not willing to take up my cross daily and that I can not take up my cross if I am not willing to deny myself which means I must not be coming after him! That may be a blessing to someone else as well as myself. Until we recognise that only when we build relationships and dig(Trip Lee) into God’s word together and not our own intepretations We will not fulfill God’s will as a collective body! Thank you for being a vessel that the Lord is using , time is winding up too fast for us to still be imature Christians when we should be damaging the world for Christ rather than crushing the body because of our selfishness and pride!

As Paul says “not that I have attained it, but I press toward the mark”. You see a lot of this post was in the first person. I struggle with this and daily have to kill “the legalist within”. It is difficult but thank God that He gives us the strength over these sins. I appreciate the compliments my brother and please START THE STUDY. Just remember to be graceful and patient. God will do the rest. Stay encouraged and keep holding it down my brother.

As I was telling ya the other day, Brah, excellent post. If I may say, it served to remind me of a conversation I had with someone on the issue one time. There was discussion taking place where one person was offended that the person exposing a church issue seemed to not pray for/treat all sins the same and questioning the intentions/actions of the other offline. Now, even though the person may’ve been flawed in his/her statements to a degree, the other person attacked by with insults/ridicule. When I saw this, of course I brought up the issue as to why they did so. Their response:
“Very simple…………I respond in kind. I match tone. Something about reaping what is sown.”
“If he wants to attack rather than question, he should put up or shut up.”
That grieved me GREATLY…..and minus the fact of how we’re to respond to our enemies, I couldn’t say I agreed that you should attack someone if they’re attacking…even if that person is someone is in error and won’t address you properly
Concerning this, a principle that comes to my mind is what Solomon said in Proverbs 26:4-5:
Proverbs 26:4-5
4 Do not answer a fool according to his folly,
or you will be like him yourself.
5 Answer a fool according to his folly,
or he will be wise in his own eyes
As Apologetist/Chaplain Randy Newman tellingly explained about these verses in his book Questioning Evangelism(powerful/resourceful book, by the way, and solid/extremely based in Scripture in case anyone wants to check it out.), “In some cases, answering people’s questions with content that they want only solidifies their unbelief.
“Consider the pair of seemingly contradictory exhortations in Proverbs 24:4-5…No wonder people have considered these two statements as evidence of a contradiction in the Bible, but the fact that they occur one after the other, however, could argue just the opposite conclusion, for in rabbinic style they show two sides of the same coin. We should not answer a fool according to his folly (i.e. using his style of expression) in a derogatory, argumentive tone, for example. The result would be a shouting match between two people who disrespect each other (in some situ ations, you ought not even answer a fool…such a fool will abuse you and you will be tempted to abuse him or her in return).
“Such a display of godlesssness is fitting for a fool but not for a follower of a gracious God. Other types of foolish responses include reacting to sarcasm with more of the same, replying to ad hominem attacks with even worse slander, or employing any kind of flawed logic in our arguments simply because our opponent does so. Increasing the percentage of ‘fooldom’ does little to advance the kingdom.”
Continuing with that, “
On the other side of the coin, we should respond to a fool’s question ‘as his folly deserves’ (v.5)(one way of doing this would be to show/exlain what the full extent of a fools’ logic would be or how far it would apply in every area of life rather than isolated ones they favor/focus on, so that they would see how impractical/ungrounded their thinking is, like asking a person opposed to absolute truth/morality and in favor of ethical relativism why they’re offended at the actions of others that bring them/their loved ones harm since, according to their own way of thinking, no one can truly say ‘What you did was absolutely wrong!!’…and the person who committed the wrong could say ‘I did what I thought was right, and besides, what does it matter since you’re no more right or wrong than I am?’ .
“Failure to do so could make the fool feel good about his or her foolish position, reinforce it, and make the fool even less open to considering the truth that could set him or her free (i.e. more willing to hear what you have to say and perhaps turn from their error)….Responding in kind with a lack of respect or worse is an easy trap to fall into. Nevertheless, when a person’s choice of words or tone of voice tells you that he or she isn’t looking for an answer, it’s best not to give one.”
To me, I thought that this was EXTREMELY TIMELY/BRILLIANT to consider.
As I’ve said often, the BIBLE calls an OPINIONATED MAN a
FOOL…..NOTE, not meaning someone who has a strong opionin, but rather someone
who simply holds to his or her opinion/pre-concieved notions REGARDLESS of all others or without ADEQUATE CONSIDERATION/INVESTIGATION of the OPINIONS of others and whether they can actually learn something from themm…….such people don’t desire TRUTH/UNDERSTANDING so much as they desire to BE RIGHT/MAKE THEIR POINT
KNOWN……& even if they have truth inherent in their points, it’s still
OPINION because the Truth they’re using is simply that which supports THEM!!!!
Proverbs 18:2
2A fool does not delight in understanding,
But only (A)in revealing his own mind.
And for that class of individual, what else would be better than to AVOID THEM
COMPLETLY?
Proverbs 14:7
Stay away from a foolish man, for you will not find knowledge on his lips.
Quote:
Proverbs 17:12
Better to meet a bear robbed of her cubs than a fool in his folly.
Proverbs 23:9
Do not speak to a fool, for he will scorn the wisdom of your words.
Proverbs 9:7
“Whoever corrects a mocker invites insult; whoever rebukes a wicked man incurs
abuse.
Proverbs 9:8
Do not rebuke a mocker or he will hate you; rebuke a wise man and he will love
you.
Quote:
Proverbs 14:6
The mocker seeks wisdom and finds none, but knowledge comes easily to the
discerning.
Proverbs 15:12
A mocker resents correction; he will not consult the wise.
I could go further (and if asked, I will) but from my understanding of the Word,
people who are foolish (myself included) are best to be avoided. Their minds are made up
that they are the ones in the RIGHT and ALL OTHERS ARE IN THE WRONG, which is
silly of course since no one can ever say they’re 100% COMPLETELY innocent on
ALL FRONTS:
Proverbs 20:9
Who can say, “I have kept my heart pure; I am clean and without sin”?
And moreover, like the Lord said, if they don’t care for it, walk away and avoid
investing your time in things that profit you nothing, for better to save words of wisdom/advice for those truly hungry than invest your time and energy
into building something that’ll not value what you offer:
Matthew 7:6
“Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do,
they may trample them under their feet, and then turn and tear you to pieces.
Jesus said point-blank that we should not entrust holy teachings to unholy or
unclean people…..and that it is futile to try to teach concepts to people who
simply won’t listen and will only tear apart what you say….and though we
should not stop giving God’s Word to unbelievers or Christian brethren, we
should be wise and discerning in what we teach to WHOM, so that we’ll not be
wasting our time and then becoming needlessly discouraged over it.
We’re not to be about enternaing a “fool”, or someone who simply won’t listen when you’ve already clearly explained yourself repeatedly and given him plenty of references to help him out but he refuses to investigate…and only wished to dialouge about foolish details/thoughts not pertaining to the main question at hand…no where in the Word are we recommended to even do so (Proverbs 9: 7-9, Proverbs 13:1, Proverbs 14:3 , Proverbs 14:6-7, Proverbs 23:9, and Proverbs 18:2, I Timothy 1:3-11, II Timothy 2:14-16, etc) It would be one thing if someone asked a question concerning doctrine and I gave references for them to check out.
For that person to check out those references and still have questions afterward that he or she is wrestling with, by all means continue to ask questions rather than automatically unload answers or become impatient with them if they don’t automatically understand a concept immediately.
It would be to seek to do as Timothy 2:23-26 and to help those in error/confusion about the truth, in the realization that people are blinded by the enemy and that it often takes time for the scales to come off when teaching them…much as it is in our lives concerning areas where we were in error but never realized it immediately or responded promptly.
It’d be whole different issue if that person was given information and yet ignored all I gave or mocked all of the things I was saying
By all means, a foolish person who’ll continue to twist scripture to suit his own viewpoints needs to be kicked to the curb……
This is something I see that Christ did QUITE OFTEN. Even though there are some questioners that are sincere and would benefit from being engaged with clear/concise statements of what the Word says (ex. consider the example where Jesus didn’t beat around the bush and responded with a direct answer….Matthew 22:23-33, Mark 12:28-31)….many that came to Him were not. Many came already set on believing what they wanted to believe, despite evidence to the contrary and other things….and Jesus never bothered to contend with them or waste truth on such people.
For example, Matthew 21:23-27
Matthew 21:23-27
The Authority of Jesus Questioned
23Jesus entered the temple courts, and, while he was teaching, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him. “By what authority are you doing these things?” they asked. “And who gave you this authority?”
24Jesus replied, “I will also ask you one question. If you answer me, I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things. 25John’s baptism—where did it come from? Was it from heaven, or from men?”
They discussed it among themselves and said, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will ask, ‘Then why didn’t you believe him?’ 26But if we say, ‘From men’—we are afraid of the people, for they all hold that John was a prophet.”
27So they answered Jesus, “We don’t know.”
Then he said, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.
In my understanding, Jesus doesn’t seem to get involved with folks when they seem to lack a desire to correctly apply truth, or even consider anything (whether Scripture or the fruit of an action) from the Word contradicting their statements.
If a question came up and you responded properly by stating what the Word says and you were even being open to dialoguing with someone who genuinely wanted to discover truth and felt a sense of importance about working through real interaction about weighty questions, but that person still went about name-calling only and repeatedly/airing only their opinion, wouldn’t it be wise simply to ignore them and not give them the time?
Again, Jesus Himself didn’t beat around the bush on many occasions and responded to those opposed to the truth in many intriguing/wise ways that called people to attention (Matthew 21:23-45, Matthew 22:12-14, Matthew 22:15-22, Mark 12:1-40)
However, Jesus often responded to insincere questions with appropriate non-answers and even chose often to not respond at all to those who didn’t really wish to dialogue about the truth / follow through on what they discovered or contend with those who only wanted truth if it supported their own views/desires (much like the situation the Pharisees trying to trap Jesus/undermine His authority, and other situations indicating the same, such as Matthew 12:38-45 and Matthew 11:20-24), why do we often choose to do otherwise? As Jesus did, we have to make sure that TRUTH isn’t wasted on anyone
Matthew 22:41-46, (Matthew 21:23-45, Matthew 12:9-12, , Matthew 22:15-22, Matthew 22:12-14, Matthew 22:15-22, Mark 12:1-40).
How often does it seem that, in giving an answer by engaging their mind or urging them to consider an alternate perspective, it only serves as more ammunition for future attacks against the Good News/Correct Doctrine?
How often in giving responses to those who do not want they do we end up aiding them in hardening their hearts in their unbelief?
Moreover, seeing how Jesus often responded to insincere questions with appropriate non-answers and even chose often to not respond at all to those who didn’t really wish to dialogue about the truth / follow through on what they discovered or contend with those who only wanted truth if it supported their own views/desires (much like the situation the Pharisees trying to trap Jesus/undermine His authority, and other situations indicating the same, such as Matthew 12:38-45 and Matthew 11:20-24), why do we often choose to do otherwise?

Dog, my bad for the long post. I should’ve posted it on my site. But something to consider..
1 Timothy 1:3-5
Warning Against False Teachers of the Law
3As I urged you when I went into Macedonia, stay there in Ephesus so that you may command certain men not to teach false doctrines any longer 4nor to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies. These promote controversies rather than God’s work—which is by faith. 5The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.
2 Timothy 2:15-26
14Keep reminding them of these things. Warn them before God against quarreling about words; it is of no value, and only ruins those who listen. 15Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.
15Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. 16Avoid godless chatter, because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly. 17Their teaching will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus, 18who have wandered away from the truth. They say that the resurrection has already taken place, and they destroy the faith of some. 19Nevertheless, God’s solid foundation stands firm, sealed with this inscription: “The Lord knows those who are his,”[a] and, “Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness.”
20In a large house there are articles not only of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay; some are for noble purposes and some for ignoble. 21If a man cleanses himself from the latter, he will be an instrument for noble purposes, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work.
22Flee the evil desires of youth, and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. 23Don’t have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels. 24And the Lord’s servant must not quarrel; instead, he must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful. 25Those who oppose him he must gently instruct, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth, 26and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will.
Of paticular interest:
Titus 3:8-10
9But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and arguments and quarrels about the law, because these are unprofitable and useless. 10Warn a divisive person once, and then warn him a second time. After that, have nothing to do with him. That man is warped and sinning, being self- condemened
IMHO, proclaiming the TRUTH, not arguing error, is the Biblical way to evangelize. Those who are divisive, unsubmissive, or self-willed should be avoided….and as Paul, any conversation/interaction that is based in foolishness/unprofitable arguments is to be shunned. D
Doesn’t mean that we should refuse to study, discuss, and examine differing interpretations of difficult bible passages. But Paul is warning against petty quarrels, not honest discussion that leads to wisdom. If foolish arguments develop, it would be best to either turn the discussion back to a helpful direction or politely excuse yourself. That’s always worked for me……
Moreover,
Ephesians 4
Unity in the Body of Christ
1As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. 2Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. 3Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. 4There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to one hope when you were called— 5one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.
If the person being talked to is going against what the WORD SAYS in Ephesians 4:1-4 regarding guarding the UNITY OF THE BRETHREN/EDIFYING ONE another, THAT’S A PROBLEM….
Note the CHARACTERISTICS Paul highlighted. According to my Macarther Study Bible, “Humility is the most foundational Christian virtue (James 4:6), is the quality of character commanded in the first beautitude (Matthew 5:3), and describes the noble grace of Christ (Philippians 2:1-8.) Gentleness or “MEEKNESS” is the inevitable product of humility, refers to that which is mild-spirited and self-controlled (Matthew 5:5, Matthew 11:29, Galatians 5:23, Col 3:12). Long suffering, in the greek, means long-tempered and refers to a resolved patience that is an outgrowth of humility and gentleness (I Thessalonians 5:14, James 5:10).
But often, THAT IS NOT THE CASE……& in reality, why is it that we praise the form that GOD HATES?? Without love/edification involved in EVERYTHING WE DO, what’s the point?
Luke 22:25-27
25Jesus said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. 26But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves. 27For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.
John 13
Jesus Washes His Disciples’ Feet
1It was just before the Passover Feast. Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he now showed them the full extent of his love.[a]
2The evening meal was being served, and the devil had already prompted Judas Iscariot, son of Simon, to betray Jesus. 3Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; 4so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. 5After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.
6He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?”
7Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.”
8″No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.”
Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.”
9″Then, Lord,” Simon Peter replied, “not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!”
10Jesus answered, “A person who has had a bath needs only to wash his feet; his whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you.” 11For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one was clean.
12When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. 13″You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. 14Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. 15I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. 16I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them…….
34″A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
Proverbs 25:15
Through patience a ruler can be persuaded, and a gentle tongue can break a bone.
1 Corinthians 8:1
Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up.
1 Corinthians 13
Love
1If I speak in the tongues[a] of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames,[b] but have not love, I gain nothing.
4Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
8Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears. 11When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. 12Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.
13And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.
2 Corinthians 10
Paul’s Defense of His Ministry
1By the meekness and gentleness of Christ, I appeal to you—I, Paul, who am “timid” when face to face with you, but “bold” when away! 2I beg you that when I come I may not have to be as bold as I expect to be toward some people who think that we live by the standards of this world. 3For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does.
Ephesians 4:28-30
29Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. 30And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
Philippians 4:1-6
Exhortations
2I plead with Euodia and I plead with Syntyche to agree with each other in the Lord. 3Yes, and I ask you, loyal yokefellow,[a] help these women who have contended at my side in the cause of the gospel, along with Clement and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the book of life.
4Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5Let your gentleness be evident to all.
Colossians 3
12Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.
15Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace.
1 Thessalonians 2:6-12
6We were not looking for praise from men, not from you or anyone else.
As apostles of Christ we could have been a burden to you, 7but we were gentle among you, like a mother caring for her little children. 8We loved you so much that we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God but our lives as well, because you had become so dear to us. 9Surely you remember, brothers, our toil and hardship; we worked night and day in order not to be a burden to anyone while we preached the gospel of God to you.
10You are witnesses, and so is God, of how holy, righteous and blameless we were among you who believed. 11For you know that we dealt with each of you as a father deals with his own children, 12encouraging, comforting and urging you to live lives worthy of God, who calls you into his kingdom and glory.
1 Timothy 6:11
[ Paul's Charge to Timothy ] But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness.
James 3:11-19
11Can both fresh water and salt[a] water flow from the same spring? 12My brothers, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.
Two Kinds of Wisdom
13Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. 14But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. 15Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, of the devil. 16For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.
17But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. 18Peacemakers who sow in peace raise a harvest of righteousness.
1 Peter 2:17
Show proper respect to everyone: Love the brotherhood of believers, fear God, honor the king.
1 Peter 3:7-9
Finally, all of you be of one mind, having compassion for one another; love as brothers, be tenderhearted, be courteous;[a] 9 not returning evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary blessing, knowing that you were called to this, that you may inherit a blessing.
1 Peter 3:14-17
14But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. “Do not fear what they fear[a]; do not be frightened.”[b] 15But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, 16keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander. 17It is better, if it is God’s will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil.
2 Peter 1:3-8
Making One’s Calling and Election Sure
3His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. 4Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.
5For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; 6and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; 7and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. 8For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
1 John 3:10
This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not a child of God; nor is anyone who does not love his brother.
1 John 4:7
[ God's Love and Ours ] Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God.Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.
1 John 4:12-21
12No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.
13We know that we live in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. 14And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. 15If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in him and he in God. 16And so we know and rely on the love God has for us.
God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him. 17In this way, love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment, because in this world we are like him. 18There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.
19We love because he first loved us. 20If anyone says, “I love God,” yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen. 21And he has given us this command: Whoever loves God must also love his brother.

By the way, I may get in trouble for this…..but in connection with the post, I’ve often found it intriguing that many with the Pharisee mentality you described often do NOT HAVE A SOLID CHURCH THEY ATTEND…..& often when questioned, their standard response is that no one is CORRECT IN THEIR THEOLOGY or THE CHURCHES THEY’VE SEEN ARE ALL INCORRECT( when the reality could be that it’s not lining up with their preferences, assumptions, and what they feel church should be).
To me, I find this a problem…..for it seems to be the mentality of one dating someone & being unwilling to commit because of the fact that they”re not the PERFECT MATE, even though the one making that claim is NOT PERFECT THEMSELVES . And God does not give permission for believers to be DATING HIS CHURCH, but to find fellowship somewhere and LOOK FOR PLACES TO SERVE AND edify rather than to SOLELY HAVE THEIR VOICES/DOCTRINAL STANCES ELEVATED.
Joshua Harris’s Book “Stop Dating the Church” speaks perfectly about the situation.
http://64.13.216.130/stop_dating_the_church.php
To me, this also seems akin (to a degree, IMHO) of the situation RARELY mentioned in MANY CHURCHES today:
3 John 1:9-11
9I wrote to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to be first, will have nothing to do with us. 10So if I come, I will call attention to what he is doing, gossiping maliciously about us. Not satisfied with that, he refuses to welcome the brothers. He also stops those who want to do so and puts them out of the church.
11Dear friend, do not imitate what is evil but what is good. Anyone who does what is good is from God. Anyone who does what is evil has not seen God.
In this passage, John condemned the violation of hospitality toward faithful ministers of the Word of God (as well as HOSPITALITY IN GENERAL, which we’re ADMONISHED TO DO)
Romans 12:9-20
Love
9Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. 10Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves. 11Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. 12Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. 13Share with God’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.
14Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. 15Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. 16Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position.[a] Do not be conceited.
17Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody. 18If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.
1 Peter 4:8-10
8Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. 9Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. 10Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms. 11If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.
In the case of Diptrephes, this was not the case. The word “preeminence” carries the idea of “desiring to be first”, or of someone SELFISH, SELF-CENTERED, and SELF-SEEKING…….and who is only concerned with having their way/others AGREE WITH HIM OR HER. This is what Diotrephes’ actions were about, which DIRECTLY contradict Jesus’s and the NT teaching on SERVANT-LEADERSHIP and the WARNINGS AGAINST AVOIDING THE CALL TO DO SO (Ezekiel 34, Matthew 20:20-28, Matthew 23, John 13, Acts 20:26-27, Philippians 2:1-11, I Timothy 3, I Thessalonians 2:1-12, Titus 1:5-9, Hebrews 13:7, Hebrews 13:17, I Peter 5, James 3:1-3)
Moreover, Diotrephes modeled the OPPOSITE of kindness/hospitality to God’s servants, even denying John’s apostolic authority over the local congregation, and as a result, denying ANY REVELATION of God that came through that authority. His pride was an issue…and in Macarther’s words, “his pride endeavored to supplant the rule of Christ through John in the church. It was the opposite of the gentle and loving Gaius who readily showed hospitality.
Diotrephes refused to have anything to do with other spiritual leaders (paticularly, those he disagreed with), slandered others without justification, refused to welcome ANY GOSPEL TEACHERS, and attempted to excommunicate those opposed to his leadership. Sins of Pride, Jealously, and slander are all present in the church…..and regardless of how many good points a leader may have, WHEN A LEADER MAKES A HABIT OF ENCOURAGING SIN AND DISCOURAGING RIGHT ACTIONS, HE OR SHE MUST BE STOPPED……for regardles of whatever claims that minister or leader is saying (i.e. “We need to teach sound doctrine”, “The leader’s in ERROR AND I THINK…”), there’s always an ISSUE OF CONTROL INVOLVED.

As another wisely said, “In John’s third letter we read about Diotrephes, who wanted to be a boss in the early church. Overly ambitious and domineering, he opposed the apostle John and set himself up as a dictator over those in his spiritual care. Anyone who took exception to him was dismissed from the congregation.
The problem of bossy church leaders was not limited to the first century. A. T. Robertson wrote a magazine article in which he rebuked leaders who follow in the footsteps of Diotrephes. After it was published, he received letters from at least 25 different church leaders, demanding that their subscriptions to the magazine be canceled. Although Robertson had never met any of them, they all said in effect, “You have personally attacked me!”
A lust for power springs from pride and selfishness. In contrast, Jesus served in humility and obedience to His Father (Phil. 2:8). He must be our pattern.”
I can’t tell you how frustrating it is to see what seems to be a “DIOTROPHES” spirit occur in churches, where people will end up discouraging people from attending godly churches PASSIONATE FOR SPREADING THE GOSPELAND telling encouraging believers to go SOLO in their walks/proclaim judgement on the ENTIRE BODY of CHRIST because they don’t share the same views on all points (i.e. “Well, I like this church…..but they believe in spiritual gifts, so don’t attend there) or “ALL PASTORS are out to get your money, and if they’re not willing to change to my views, they’re in error”)……or how often churches will refuse to even have people of differing denominations come to their church because of disagreement over PERIPHEALS like Spiritual Gifts/Charismata even though they still hold to the Gospel of Christ (i.e Even though you llove the Lord, You’re Charismatic, and therefore we can’t have you come to an event at our church and preach on the GOSPEL)
There was one individual I was discussing with. Material was given for a person seeking to learn solid information, and when people were given like like John Macarther, Piper, and Sproul….he would not accept my suggestion to add CJ. Mahanney & Joshua Harris as well on the basis that they believed in the same things pentecostals agreed on (i.e. spiritual gifts, prophecy, etc).
In his words, “Insisting on the validity of a “Charismatic” experience is a violation of sound doctrine in several areas, not the least being the authority of Scripture.”
I found that silly.
We all have beliefs (some of them fervent); we all have experiences, and our tendency is to want to measure others by our yardsticks….thinking our convictions/experiences are true & should be the norm while different ideas are thought to be inferior or invalid
However, as Acts 15 & history shows, having councils where differing viewpoints are discussed can help aid the effectiveness/authority of the elders/leaders of a local body.
As Paul & Barnabus and the Jews in Antioch handled the issue through confronting the problem, giving all sides of the argument a fair-hearing & holding the discussion in the presence of were spiritually mature & trustworthy leaders (Acts 15:2), so the same is still needed today in handling issues of the FAITH…..
Think a good example of what a Biblical Council would look like today can be found with John MacArthur & others:
http://www.t4g.org/speakers.html
Macarther AND PIPER themselves were willing to work with Mahanney/Harris…& has even recommended their SOLID
Resources….JUST as Piper, RC Sproul & others have MULTIPLE TIMES for YEARS!!!

Reformation 21
T’S ILLOGICAL CLAIMING ONE CANNOT LEARN FROM OR ASSOCIATE with Believers holding
DIFFERING interpretations ——For what’s ESSENTIAL is THE CENTRALITY OF THE
GOSPEL OF CHRIST….
IMO, SOMETHING’S HIGHLY OFF when we’re willing to DIVIDE OVER NON-ESSENTIAL
issues rather than UNITING FOR THE SAKE OF SPREADING THE GOSPEL…..for not all
Followers will resemble each other or belong to the SAME GROUPS. People who are on Jesus’ side have the SAME GOAL of BUILDING UP THE KINGDOM of GOD, & THEY
SHOULD NOT LET THEIR DIFFERENCES INTERFERE WITH THIS GOAL ( I Corinthians 12,
Ephesians 4:1-16).
If someone shares common faith in Christ, THEY SHOULD be
COOPERATED WITH, as the Word says (Mark 9:38-41)
Mark 9:38-41
Whoever Is Not Against Us Is for Us
38″Teacher,” said John, “we saw a man driving out demons in your name and we told him to stop, because he was not one of us.”
39″Do not stop him,” Jesus said. “No one who does a miracle in my name can in the next moment say anything bad about me, 40for whoever is not against us is for us. 41I tell you the truth, anyone who gives you a cup of water in my name because you belong to Christ will certainly not lose his reward.

Thanks for another great post. It’s not in my heart to write something that would hurt of offend someone. I like to ask questions in a way that we all can answer. We need balance in the blogosphere. I visited a lot of so call Christian blogs that have some hateful writing on them. Some of the stuff they write is mean spirited. Someone could have made an honest mistake. On some blogs people are just not friendly, you are afraid to post because of the meanness.

Lionel,
Great post brother. I’m taking this one to heart and soften up a bit!
Merry Christmas!

Hey Bro:
Most of the Pharisees missed the mark when Messiah showed up, but they shared with many of us the same passion–a zeal for orthodoxy.
I appreciate your post, as I sometimes wonder if my zeal for sound doctrine stands in the way of the Law of love.
Paul tells us that the two should not be in conflict; that the goal of our teaching should be “love that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith” (1 Tim. 1:5).
I hope that when the Lord judges me, He will say that I used the Sword against the wolves but not against the sheep.

This is my first encounter with your blog, and I must say that it’s refreshing. It’s refreshing to see that the whole world isn’t completely steeped in legalism. It’s pretty cool thay I “stumbled” across it ,because it just so happens that this is what I was led to preach on this past Sunday.Keep up the good work.God bless.

I am flattered that I could be of some assitance. God bless.
